NAP consistency: why your hotel's name and address must match

Your hotel's name, address and phone sit on dozens of listings. Why they must match, what a mismatch costs, and a one-hour audit that finds and fixes it.

A guest finds your hotel on Google at eleven at night and taps Call. A recording says the number does not exist. It is the landline you gave up two years ago, still sitting on an old listing. The guest books the next hotel on the list.

This post explains what NAP consistency is, where your details live, and how to check and fix every listing in about an hour.

Your details live in more places than you think

Try writing down every place your hotel appears, and the real list will be far longer than your first one. Each listing was typed by someone, on some day, and most were never checked again.

  • Your own website: the header, the footer, the contact page and the map link.
  • Your Google Business Profile, which feeds Google Search and Google Maps.
  • Every OTA: Booking.com, Agoda, Expedia, MakeMyTrip, Goibibo and Airbnb.
  • Instagram and your WhatsApp Business profile.
  • Other map apps, local directories, travel review sites and wedding listings.
  • Print and messages: the signboard, visiting cards, invoices and booking confirmations.

Some of these you set up yourself. Some were made by an OTA, a directory or a past manager. A few may have been created by guests who tagged your hotel with a name they guessed.

A mismatch costs you guests before it costs you rankings

A wrong detail hurts in two ways. The first is plain and costs you money this week.

Guests reach the wrong place

A dead landline loses the late-night caller. The Instagram bio still shows a former manager's mobile, so enquiries go to someone who left. The map pin sits on the back gate in a service lane, and every taxi driver follows it. A guest looks for the name on their booking, and your signboard shows a different one.

Search engines can't tell which listing is right

Search engines try to match every listing to one real place. When the name, address or phone differs, they can't be sure two listings are the same hotel. You can end up with a duplicate listing, or with the wrong phone number on the listing guests see.

Google's guidelines ask businesses to use the name they use in the real world: on the storefront, the website and the stationery. Matching details also help when your channel manager sends rates to Google, because Google has to tie them to your map listing. We cover that in Google Hotels free booking links.

Write one master version before you touch any listing

Fixing listings one by one, from memory, creates new mismatches. Start with a single master version in a note you can copy from.

DetailWrite it like thisAvoid
NameExactly as on your signboardExtra words such as "& Banquets" or "near railway station"
AddressBuilding, street, area, city, PIN code, state, in one fixed orderTwo spellings of the same street
PhoneOne main number, answered day and night, written as +91 98765 43210A staff member's personal mobile
WebsiteYour own domainA link to an OTA listing
Map pinThe entrance guests useThe back gate or the middle of the building

Add your WhatsApp number, email, and check-in and check-out times to the same note. From now on, nobody types these details from memory, because everyone copies them from the note.

Every time someone retypes your address, they get a fresh chance to get it wrong.

Worked example

One hotel, six listings

In this example, a made-up 18-room hotel checks six listings against its master version: Hotel Saffron Court, 14 Station Road, Jaipur 302001.

ListingWhat it showsProblem
Google Business ProfileSaffron Court Hotel & BanquetsExtra words in the name
Booking.comCorrect name, an old landlineA dead phone number
MakeMyTripCorrectNone
Instagram bioA former manager's mobileThe number left with the person
Website footerCorrect name, no PIN codeAn incomplete address
Google Maps pinThe back gate on a service laneTaxis go to the wrong gate

Two of these six can lose the hotel guests: the dead landline and the wrong gate. Those get fixed first, and the other four are tidy-ups for the same afternoon.

Run the audit in about an hour

  1. Write the master version (10 minutes). Use the table above and save it where your team can copy it.
  2. Search like a guest (15 minutes). Search your hotel's name with your city, then your name alone, then your phone number. Note every listing that comes up, including duplicates.
  3. Check your OTA extranets (15 minutes). Open each property details page and compare the name, address and contact phone with your master.
  4. Check your own channels (10 minutes). Look at your website footer, contact page, Instagram bio and WhatsApp Business profile.
  5. Fix and log (10 minutes). Change what you can now. Some OTAs lock the name and address, so send those as change requests to partner support.

Let your website state your details in a form search engines read

Structured data is a small label in your website's code that states your hotel's details in a fixed format. Guests never see it, but search engines read it to learn which name, address and phone belong together.

The free ZimmerStack hotel website does this for you. You type your details once in the studio's Location & contact section: full address, Google Maps link, phone, WhatsApp, email, and check-in and check-out times. The site then publishes your name, address, phone, and check-in and check-out times as structured data. It adds no star ratings to that label, because a hotel can't award itself stars in search results.

Connect your own domain, and the site tells search engines that your domain is its main address. For the bigger picture, read how to build a hotel brand. For turning those visits into bookings, read why your website should take more of your bookings.

What to do this week

  1. Write your master version. Name, address, phone, website and map pin, saved where your team can copy them.
  2. Search your own phone number. Every listing that shows an old number goes to the top of your list.
  3. Fix Google and your website first. They are the two places guests check before they call.
  4. Send change requests to your OTAs. One message each, pasted from the master version.
  5. Set a reminder for six months. Run the same audit again, and after any change of number, name or entrance.

What does NAP stand for?

NAP stands for name, address and phone number, the three details that identify a local business online. Some people add the website address and call it NAP+W.

Does NAP consistency affect my hotel's Google ranking?

Google doesn't publish how it ranks local results, so be wary of anyone who promises a position. Its guidelines ask businesses to use the name they use in the real world, and matching details make it easier to tie all your listings to one hotel. The surest gain is simpler: guests find you and reach you.

Does Road versus Rd count as a mismatch?

It is a small mismatch, and it matters far less than a wrong detail. Pick one spelling and use it everywhere, but fix an old number, a former name or a map pin at the wrong gate first, because those cost you guests.

What name should my hotel use on Google?

Use the name on your signboard, the one guests say. Don't add words like best budget hotel near the station, because Google's guidelines forbid extra keywords in a business name and a listing can be suspended for it.

How does the ZimmerStack website help with NAP?

The free ZimmerStack hotel website publishes your name, address, phone, and check-in and check-out times as structured data, a format search engines read. You type your details once in the studio, and the site uses that one version.
